- Two 15-year operation and maintenance (O&M) contracts and deployment of advanced technologies for Mumbai's largest drinking water production plants , thereby strengthening the city's long-term water supply security.
- This is the first time a French company has signed contracts of such magnitude (combined capacity of the two plants = 2910 MLD, or 2.91 million m3 per day ) in the municipal water sector in India.
- Veolia is on track to more than double its revenues in India by 2030 in water, hazardous waste treatment and energy through ambitious and transformative projects, highlighting strong growth momentum and a long-term commitment.
Veolia, a world leader in environmental services, is strengthening its presence in India by securing unprecedented strategic contracts for two of Mumbai's largest drinking water production plants , thus supporting the city's safety and sustainability goals in this sector. These are the largest contracts ever signed by a French company in the municipal water sector.
The group has been selected as the technology provider and awarded 15-year operation and maintenance contracts for the future Bhandup (2 billion liters per day) and Panjrapur (910 million liters per day) water treatment plants in Mumbai. Developed by Welspun Enterprises Ltd, both facilities are expected to be fully operational by 2030 and cover more than 60% of the city's water needs. Equipped with Veolia's advanced technologies , the plants will provide high-quality, safe water while optimizing their footprint, reducing energy consumption, and improving operational efficiency—making them ideally suited to dense urban environments.
To win these contracts, Veolia drew on 25 years of experience in India, including its most significant achievement to date: operating the innovative water supply project in Nagpur , across five drinking water production plants with a total capacity of approximately 786 million liters per day . Through digital innovations such as Hubgrade®, Veolia was able to improve the performance of the city's water distribution system, reducing the volume of water not reaching consumers from around 70% to less than 30%, while providing a continuous water supply to more than 3.5 million residents. The company also maintains a strong operational presence in Delhi through Nangloi Water Services, which supplies nearly one million residents in the Nangloi region, as well as in several cities in Karnataka, providing large-scale, integrated municipal solutions.
“These major new partnerships in the water sector demonstrate Veolia’s commitment to India. Our goal is to bring our long-term operational and technological excellence to every project, ensuring that these critical assets operate sustainably for decades. Building on our strong presence in key cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Nagpur, we are expanding our footprint into states like Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Karnataka to co-create solutions that support India’s 2070 carbon neutrality ambitions. In line with our GreenUp strategic program, we are proud to be the preferred solutions provider to support India’s green transformation.”
Beyond municipal water, expanding tailored solutions in waste and energy
In India, Veolia plays a key role in hazardous waste management, a cornerstone of its GreenUp strategic program. The company operates strategic infrastructure within India's industrial hubs, including Gujarat's first Zero Liquid Discharge (ZRL) facility in Ankleshwar , a flagship project enabling responsible wastewater management for industrial clusters. Veolia is also developing a waste storage facility in Magnad, which will become the country's largest industrial hazardous waste treatment site with a capacity of 15 million metric tons and an operational lifespan of 30 years. The company collaborates with nearby local communities to produce green fuel for on-site use, thereby reducing the carbon footprint of hazardous waste treatment. Veolia is also advancing its expansion projects across Maharashtra , including projects near Mumbai , to strengthen regional hazardous waste management capacity in line with the evolving needs of local industries. A pioneer in industrial decarbonization, Veolia operates the first 5-tonne-per-day carbon capture facility in India for Tata Steel in Jamshedpur, capturing CO₂ directly from blast furnace gas for reuse and thus positioning the company at the forefront of national carbon neutrality ambitions.
