What is Hazardous Waste Management?

Hazardous Waste Management is the collection, treatment (and sometimes the identification) of materials deemed as hazardous. Hazardous waste must be handled using specialist teams and equipment to mitigate damage to human and environmental health.

When is waste defined as hazardous?

Waste is classified as hazardous if it harms human health or the environment. This can be defined further by the List of Waste (LoW) code, previously referred to as EWC codes, determined by how the waste is produced.

Hazardous waste is defined as waste material that is dangerous or potentially harmful to our public health or the environment.

While in their simplest forms they are liquids, solids, gases, or a sludge, we also think of hazardous waste in terms of its originating waste stream: liquid waste, clinical/medical waste and e-waste.

Veolia’s highly trained and experienced team provide integrated hazardous and contaminated waste identification, collection, treatment and regulatory-approved disposal services for a range of commercial industries and waste types including liquid waste, clinical/medical waste and e-waste.

Understanding Hazardous Waste

Hazardous waste is a term used to describe waste materials that are inherently dangerous or have the potential to harm human health or the environment. These materials can exist in various forms, including liquids, solids, gases, or sludge. At Veolia, we categorise hazardous waste based on its originating waste stream, which includes:

  • Liquid Waste: This category encompasses a wide range of hazardous liquids, from industrial chemicals to contaminated water. Veolia has the expertise and technology to manage liquid waste safely and responsibly.
  • Clinical/Medical Waste: The proper disposal of clinical and medical waste is crucial to prevent the spread of diseases and protect healthcare workers and the public. Veolia offers specialised solutions for clinical waste management.
  • E-Waste: Electronic waste, or e-waste, is a growing concern due to its complex composition and potential environmental impact. Our team is equipped to handle e-waste in an environmentally friendly manner, ensuring the safe disposal and recycling of electronic devices.

Real-World Impact

At Veolia, we believe in demonstrating our commitment through action. Here are a few examples of how our hazardous waste management solutions have made a positive impact:

  • Reduced Environmental Footprint: Our advanced treatment methods have significantly reduced the environmental footprint of hazardous waste disposal.
  • Enhanced Public Health: Proper hazardous waste management contributes to a healthier and safer community for everyone.
  • Resource Recovery: We prioritise the recovery of valuable resources from hazardous waste, reducing the need for virgin materials and promoting circular economy principles.

Our Footprint in Hazardous Waste Management in India

Veolia India entered the industrial services sector in 2018 by acquiring a 70% stake in the Detox Group, leading to the formation of Detox India Private Limited. This strategic move marked Veolia’s foray into the hazardous waste management market in Gujarat. The company offers cost-effective, technology-driven solutions that enable clients across various industries to reduce, reuse, and recycle waste—enhancing both environmental sustainability and business profitability. With four hazardous waste treatment facilities located in Ankleshwar, Dahej, Magnad, and Kutch, Veolia supports over 3,500 clients in meeting regulatory standards, optimizing operational efficiency, and conserving natural resources.
